Yes, I was just a wee lad in the 80’s. However, the romance that was so beautifully portrayed on the screen was something I could appreciate when watching the entire trilogy.
Marty & Jennifer
Take, for example, the time defying love of Marty McFly and Jennifer Parker. The young love that began by frolicking through the downtown square of Hill Valley. Their love survived a shock revelation of a grim future, an alternate near-apocalyptic present, and an awkwardly different face once the correct timeline was restored.
Their love even survived the reverse Oedipal complexes of Marty’s trip to the 50s. Did he ever reveal the truth to Jennifer like he revealed his Calvin Klein’s to his mother?
Doc & Clara
Or how about the love of Doc Brown for Clara Clayton. A man of science wouldn’t believe in love and first sight, reason would always prevail. But, even knowing the dangers of love, allowed himself to fall for the lovely Clara when they first met.
Building a family and traveling through time was a truly romantic end to their story.
George & Lorraine
The love George had for Lorraine was immature and weak when we first meet the couple. Her initial love for him came from a Nightingale effect after his falling from a tree while being a peeping Tom.
However, seeing him capture his bravery and defend her honor against Biff, she became truly smitten and the foundation for a better love carried them back to the present.
